Navigating Identity – Culture, Islam, and Society

Many of us come from collectivist cultures and have family members who want to uphold collectivist values and view points. We also exist in a society that operates from a more individualistic stance. Being raised in what feels like an environment with opposing view points, we may feel lost about who we are, and where we stand in terms of our values and boundaries. It can become even more complicated when faith and culture seem to be mixed together in a way that feels contradictory.

Why is it important to talk about identity?

It is important to have space to talk about and address the internal tension we are feeling. Knowing who we are, our values and lines can help us with living with more purposefully and with clarity. When we don’t know who we are, we risk feeling disconnected from ourselves, others and carrying shame and guilt.
