Recovering From Gender Based Abuse
Abuse can take many forms – emotional, physical, sexual, verbal, financial, etc. At its core, the purpose of abuse is to use fear and intimidation to control someone’s actions, decisions and behaviour. While we understand that abuse can happen to anyone, at Muslim Women’s Wellness we understand that there are certain factors such as culture and gender that make Muslim women more vulnerable to being on the receiving end of abuse – ie. abuse from spouse, parents, in-laws, children, workplace, school etc. We also understand that various factors make it difficult or impossible to leave an abusive environment. Abuse can be traumatic and over time can lead to the development of anxiety, depression, the destruction of a person’s self worth and their connection to other and to spirituality.
How we can help:
We provide a compassionate listening ear and give you space to talk about how you are feeling and the challenges you are running into
We provide education on what abuse us and how to address the abuse the you are experiencing
We help you to address the shame and guilt you are feeling and provide tools to build self confidence and self awareness
For those who want to leave, but cannot, we work with you to build safety and find ways to feel more grounded
We help you to differentiate between what is Islam and what is culture
